Exciting news – Coastguard Sumner was privileged to receive both the Unit of the Year Awards and the Rescue of the Year at the 2025 Coastguard Volunteer of Excellence Awards.
The awards, open to all units, recognise and celebrate Coastguard volunteers from across Aotearoa for their commitment, dedication, and lifesaving involvement.
Coastguard Sumner was awarded Rescue for the Year for its role in rescuing a man who had fallen nearly 100m down a cliff face near Godley Head.
The Unit of the Year was awarded for Sumner’s innovation, strong governance, culture, connections to community and SAR partners, plus its outstanding record of saving lives on the water.
A huge thank you to every crew member and Board member at Coastguard Sumner, plus to their families who prove the support without which we could not achieve what we do.

And of course congratulations to all the award winners in the other Coastguard categories too.
